J.F. Launier’s custom 1964 Buick Riviera is one of the best in the business, according to the prestigious 2014 Ridler Award it just won in Detroit.
Based on the original Buick Riviera, his custom build featured front fender vents, a ducted radiator with a hot-air exit in the hood, and an absolutely massive, 6.2-liter Chevrolet LS-series turbo V8 generating 850 horsepower.
“It is the biggest, biggest thing in the car world,” said Launier about the award, barely able to contain his excitement. It took him more than 20,000 hours over the past six years to produce the custom Riviera, which he has named Rivision. Though he won’t say how much it cost him over the years, estimates run as high as $300,000.
According to Terry Denomme, editor of Canadian Hot Rods magazine, this is a monumental win marking the first time a Canadian takes the 2014 Ridler Award since 1987. He also mentioned that Launier actually plans on driving the car at upcoming competitions, rather than let it become an idle show car. Nice!
