‘Rain Man’ Buick Roadmaster from 1949 Sells Big at Auction

The Buick Roadster was originally made from 1936-1958 and then was brought back from 1991-1996. The Roadster pictured here is from that second series.

Props from films have notoriously sold high at auctions, even many years after the film debuts, especially when those props are classic cars.

Recently, the 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible for the Oscar-winning film Rain Man, starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, sold for $170,500 at an auction in Dallas, Texas. This specific Roadster from the film is beige-colored with red trim and accents.

The two-door Rain Man Buick Roadmaster was sold “fully loaded,” with tons of what would have been really special features at that time – as well as some special upgrades that were required for cameras to film scenes for the movie. Needless to say, even if it wasn’t a piece of cinematic history, this is no ordinary Buick.

The anonymous donor is said to be a collector, and – we think it is safe to say – a big fan of the movie Rain Man, or at least Tom Cruise.

What do you think? Is $170,500 too much for a 1949 Buick Roadmaster? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and if you’d like to check out a Buick model made during this century, visit us anytime at Simi Valley Buick GMC.
