Recently, GM announced some exciting news for truck and SUV lovers alike! The new 2015 GMC Sierra, Yukon Denali, and Yukon XL Denali will come standard with a new 8-speed automatic transmission when outfitted with the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine.
The 8L90 standard 8-speed automatic transmission, although just as light and small as the outgoing 6L90 6-speed, will provide a numerically higher first gear ratio and lower rear axle ratios. The former will help drivers start off more easily with heavy loads or while trailering, and the latter will reduce engine RPMs on the highway to improve fuel economy (EPA estimates to come soon!)
Fuel economy is further improved when the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine switches to four-cylinder operation under lighter loads. At full capacity, however, the V8 cranks out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, enough to tow up to 12,000 pounds based on the new SAE J2807 Recommended Practices.
